Academic Services
The balancing of academic achievement and athletic success is the primary concern of LIU Brooklyn’s department of athletics. The University’s student-athlete academic services are designed to help the department fulfill its commitment to all student-athletes in their pursuit of academic excellence.
At LIU, there is a high priority placed on academic integrity, along with an opportunity to take advantage of extraordinary academic programs. The goal of the LIU Athletic Department is to help student-athletes seek help whether it be for tutorial assistance in the Academic Reinforcement Center, Math Center, or Writing Center; scheduling of classes, personal or career development or to improve on their test-taking and time-management skills.
The academic progress of student-athletes is monitored to ensure they meet and exceed the University’s academic goals in compliance with NCAA and institutional standards. In conjunction with the director and senior associate director of athletics, it has formed close relationships with the Office for Student Development and Retention to assist the student-athlete in negotiating the demands of daily practices and games..
LIU athletes have excelled in and been recognized for their work in the classroom earning several national awards from their respective coaches’ associations, including women’s basketball by the WBCA, volleyball by the AVCA, women’s track and field by the USTCA, lacrosse by the IWLCA, softball by the NFCA, tennis by the ITA, women’s bowling by the NTCA and both men’s and women’s soccer teams by the NSCAA.
LIU’s 200-plus student-athletes have routinely posted a cumulative grade point average above 3.00, while also earning recognition on the Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll and NEC Academic Honor Roll. The University has twice been recognized by the NCAA and USA Today for having the highest graduation rate in the nation as compared to the remainder of the student body.
The University also boasts a pair of faculty members, Bob Nathanson (education) and Arthur Kimmel (sociology) who have written the definitive transition-to-college guidebook, currently used by student-athletes nationwide, The College Athlete’s Guide to Academic Success: Tips from Peers and Profs (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008). NCAA President Myles Brand wrote in the foreword that, “Professors Nathanson and Kimmel have taken the mystery out of success in college by providing a most useful and readable guide.”
